FOD Bag

Feb 14, 2013

FOD Bag is concerned with how foreign object debris is controlled, especially in the aerospace and defense industries. As a result, we have collected products and designed and manufactured other products to help keep job sites clear of foreign object debris – to keep that debris from causing avoidable accidents. In this blog we will introduce new products, talk about news items, and raise questions to help develop awareness to completely eliminate Foreign Object Damage.

The Role of the FOD Bag

On an active flight line or in a maintenance hangar, technicians and ground crew are often required to carry a dedicated FOD bag. The rule is simple: if you see it, pick it up. * Containment: Unlike a standard pocket, a FOD bag is designed to be easily accessible but securely closed (often with a heavy-duty Velcro or drawstring) so that the collected debris doesn’t accidentally fall back out onto the tarmac.

  • Accountability: These bags are often used during “FOD Walks,” where a line of personnel walks across the runway or carrier deck to clear every inch of debris.

  • Material: They are typically made of high-visibility, reinforced nylon to withstand the harsh environments of an airfield and ensure they are easily spotted if misplaced.

Why It Matters: The Stakes of Aviation Safety

A single small item in the wrong place can lead to catastrophic results. Aviation professionals categorize the danger into two main threats:

  • Engine Ingestion: Jet engines act like giant vacuums. A small stone or a misplaced tool sucked into an intake can shred turbine blades in seconds.

  • Tire Damage: Metal fragments or hardware on a runway can puncture aircraft tires during high-speed takeoffs or landings, leading to blowouts.

Types of Aviation FOD Bags

Type Use Case Features
Pouch Style Individual maintainers Clips to a belt; used for small hardware like safety wire clippings and rivets.
Large Collection Bags Runway “FOD Walks” Large capacity; often bright orange or yellow for visibility.
Magnetic Sweeper Bags Specialized cleanup Used to hold metallic debris collected by magnetic bars.

The “Clean As You Go” Culture

In aviation, the FOD bag is more than just a container; it is a symbol of a “Clean As You Go” (CAYG) culture.

  1. Inventory Control: Every tool and part must be accounted for. If a bolt is replaced, the old one goes immediately into the FOD bag.

  2. Safety Wire Management: One of the most common items found in aviation FOD bags is “pigtails”—the small, sharp ends of safety wire that are clipped off during maintenance. These are notorious for causing tire punctures.
