FOD Shift Handoff Sheet

Carry open FOD findings, hotspots, and pending actions across shift changes — so nothing gets rediscovered from scratch or dropped entirely.

Quick answer: A FOD shift handoff sheet documents open findings, active hotspots, and pending corrective actions at the end of every shift, so the incoming shift starts with full context instead of rediscovering the same issues or missing something time-sensitive.

The Handoff Problem

FOD control frequently fails at shift boundaries, not during a shift. An issue identified late in one shift, without a formal handoff, either gets forgotten, gets re-discovered hours later by the next shift, or worse — work continues in an area that should have remained restricted.

Handoff Checklist

Cover these items at every shift change:

  • Open findings not yet corrected, with location and status
  • Any area currently restricted or under an active FOD walkdown
  • Tools or equipment not yet returned to shadow board / count reconciliation pending
  • Any escalated item awaiting a decision or resource
  • Scheduled walks or audits due during the incoming shift

Handoff Methods

A written sheet, reviewed verbally between outgoing and incoming shift leads, is the most reliable method — verbal-only handoffs are prone to being rushed or skipped under time pressure. Where shifts don’t overlap, the sheet must stand entirely on its own.

Escalation: What Cannot Wait

Some items cannot wait for the next shift’s routine review — a FOD Critical area with an unresolved finding, for example. Define which categories require immediate escalation to a supervisor rather than routine handoff, regardless of the time of day.

Cross-Shift Trend Review

Periodically review a run of handoff sheets together, not just individually. A finding that reappears across multiple shift handoffs in the same location is a hotspot — feed it into your Hotspot Map Worksheet rather than treating each occurrence as isolated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a verbal handoff enough?
Not on its own — pair it with a written sheet. Verbal-only handoffs are prone to being rushed or forgotten under time pressure.
What if shifts don't overlap?
The written handoff sheet needs to stand entirely on its own, left in a consistent, expected location for the incoming shift lead.
How long should handoff sheets be retained?
Keep a rolling history — they’re a valuable input for cross-shift trend review and for your program’s documentation package.
What should trigger immediate escalation instead of routine handoff?
Any unresolved finding in a FOD Critical area, or anything that would delay a scheduled aircraft or equipment release — define these categories in advance.
