About the FOD Walkdown Guide and Checklist

Quick answer: A FOD walkdown is a deliberate inspection of a defined area for foreign objects, loose articles, tool or hardware discrepancies, housekeeping conditions and damaged controls that could create Foreign Object Damage risk. A strong walkdown program does more than pick up debris: it detects weak controls before those weaknesses become incidents.

Who it is for: Supervisors, FOD program managers, quality teams and inspection personnel in hangars, manufacturing cells, maintenance areas, assembly zones and ramps.

Important: This guide is educational. It does not replace customer requirements, approved company procedures, contractual requirements, AS9146 or NAS 412 obligations, FAA requirements, or other applicable regulatory and safety requirements. Organizations should define inspection frequencies, responsibilities, controls and release criteria based on their own risks and requirements.

What’s Inside the Guide

Twelve sections from walkdown objectives to ready-to-use forms.

Objectives and Planning

Why the goal is control, not just a clean floor, how walkdown differs from clean-as-you-go, and how to define the area and plan the walk.

What to Inspect

Floors, ramps and travel paths, plus the loose hardware, fasteners, safety wire, cotter pins, rivets, washers, clips, fragments, stones and packaging to look for.

Conducting the Walkdown

The seven-step method: Plan, Inspect, Identify, Remove and Record, Correct, Trend and Verify.

Findings and Corrective Action

How to classify findings, remove or contain FOD, escalate, record what matters and track corrective actions to closure.

Trending and Supervisor Closeout

Useful trend categories for spotting recurring sources, and the supervisor closeout checks that confirm the boundary was covered.

Failures, Checklist and Forms

Common walkdown failures, an implementation checklist, and Forms A to E including a sample completed FOD walk.

The Seven-Step Walkdown

The guide’s core method for every inspection.

1. Plan
Confirm the boundary, route, participants, current work, hazards and known concerns.
2. Inspect
Move systematically. Look high, low, under, behind, around and inside permitted areas, not just at the obvious floor surface.
3. Identify
Determine what was found, where it came from if known, and whether it indicates a larger concern.
4. Remove and Record
Remove or contain FOD when authorized and record findings according to the program’s criteria.
5. Correct
Fix immediate causes where possible: close a container, restore a cover, secure hardware or clean the condition.
6. Trend
Capture information useful for recurring-source analysis: area, item type, shift, process and owner.
7. Verify
Confirm the area and required actions meet the organization’s release or closeout criteria.

Questions This Guide Helps You Answer

  • Is foreign material present where it should not be?
  • Are tools, parts, hardware, consumables, personal items and work materials controlled?
  • Are FOD containers, covers, barriers, signs, shadow boards and storage controls being used correctly?
  • Are housekeeping or process conditions creating recurring FOD?
  • Can the area be safely released or returned to normal operation?

How to Use This Guide

  1. Use Sections 1 to 6 to establish or improve your walkdown process.
  2. Use the field checklist during routine inspections.
  3. Use the finding log and corrective-action tracker to document and close issues.
  4. Use trend data to identify recurring sources, locations, shifts or processes.
  5. Tailor every form to your facility, customer requirements and approved FOD Prevention Program.
