About the 30-Day FOD Program Implementation Plan

Quick answer: By Day 30, the organization should have a documented current-state assessment, assigned ownership, defined FOD risk areas, foundational policies and responsibilities, key controls in operation, trained personnel, routine inspections and walkdowns, an incident and corrective-action process, initial performance measures and a documented improvement backlog. This plan breaks that work into a day-by-day roadmap.

Who it is for: FOD managers, quality and operations leaders and implementation teams building a new FOD prevention program or strengthening an existing one.

Please note: Day 30 is the beginning, not the finish. An effective FOD Prevention Program requires continual attention. Use this plan alongside your customer, contractual and regulatory requirements.

What’s Inside the Plan

Six phases covering all 30 days, plus checklists and templates.

Before Day 1

Define why the program is being built and collect existing information: requirements, procedures, training, maps, prior findings and supplier requirements.

Days 1 to 5: Assess and Define

Establish scope and requirements, perform the current-state assessment, map FOD risk, define area controls and prioritize the gap list.

Days 6 to 10: Build the Program

Define ownership, draft or update the FOD prevention procedure, and define tool and loose-item accountability, housekeeping and collection, and product protection.

Days 11 to 15: Implement Controls

Install or improve collection points, improve storage, mark and communicate controlled areas, establish walkdown routes and checklists, and pilot the controls.

Days 16 to 20: Train and Engage

Finalize training content, train supervisors and FOD champions and then employees, address contractors and visitors, and launch program communication.

Days 21 to 30: Inspect, Measure and Sustain

Conduct formal walkdowns, test missing-item response and incident reporting, audit, correct gaps, establish baseline metrics, review trends, hold a management review and launch the sustainment plan.

The Four-Week Roadmap

  • Week 1, build the foundation: assess, define scope, identify requirements, assign leadership, classify risk and establish the implementation plan.
  • Week 2, implement key controls: housekeeping, clean-as-you-go, tool, part and material control, collection, area marking, product protection and documentation.
  • Week 3, train and engage: employee training, walkdowns, supervisor routines, reporting, contractor controls and communication.
  • Week 4, measure and improve: audit, incident response, corrective action, trend data, management review, close gaps and create the sustainment plan.

How to Use This Plan

  1. Complete the Before Day 1 preparation and collect existing information.
  2. Work through each phase, assigning an owner to each day’s action.
