About the FOD Audit and Inspection Checklist

Quick answer: An inspection answers whether the current area and task controls are in place. A program audit tests whether documented controls work across sampled operations. This guide gives you reusable inspection checklists, six audit modules, finding and containment records, and corrective-action and effectiveness tools to keep objective evidence of both.

Who it is for: Quality auditors, FOD managers, supervisors and inspectors in aerospace manufacturing, assembly and MRO work areas, and airport operators using the airside supplement.

Please note: An area checklist cannot show that an inaccessible cavity is clear. A program audit cannot replace required product inspection, maintenance sign-off or release authority. The core checklist is intended for aerospace manufacturing, assembly and MRO work areas, and the airside supplement must be tailored to approved airport procedures.

What’s Inside the Checklist

Reusable checklists, six audit modules and recording forms.

Criteria and Timing

Set criteria before assigning a result, and choose timing and sample based on the controlling requirements, hardware exposure, task changes and findings.

Daily and Task Inspection

A reusable inspection header with a daily or task FOD inspection checklist.

Six Audit Modules

Module A ownership and program control, B area designation and access, C tools and item accountability, D housekeeping and collection, E hardware protection and handoffs, F training and corrective action.

Contractor and Airside Checklists

A contractor and temporary-work inspection, plus an optional airside FOD inspection supplement for airport operations.

Findings and Corrective Action

How to write findings someone can act on using criterion, evidence and consequence, a finding and containment record, and a corrective action and effectiveness record with a worked example.

Summary, Log and Tailoring

An audit summary and follow-up decision form, a recurring FOD inspection log, and guidance for tailoring and document control.

Key Practices From the Guide

A short preview of how the checklist is meant to be used.

A question is not an audit criterion
Set the criteria before assigning a result, so every finding can be traced to a requirement or approved procedure.
Write findings someone can act on
Use criterion, evidence and consequence so the owner understands what was observed, what it was compared against and why it matters.
Do not transfer hangar controls to the airfield
Do not move hangar classifications, tape layouts or inspection routines onto runways or taxiways without the applicable approvals.
Prove the fix worked
Use the corrective action and effectiveness record, and the worked example of finding closure, to show that actions were verified and not merely completed.
Tailor and control your version
Prepare a site-approved version of the checklist and manage it as a controlled document.

Choose the Right Tool for the Job

  • FOD inspection: are the current area and task controls in place?
  • FOD program audit: do documented controls work across the sampled operations?
  • Hardware inspection: does the item meet its approved inspection requirements?

How to Use the Checklist

  1. Decide whether you are performing an inspection, a program audit or a hardware inspection.
  2. Set criteria and choose timing and sample.
  3. Use the daily or task checklist, or the relevant audit modules.
  4. Record findings with criterion, evidence and consequence.
  5. Contain the condition and assign corrective action with an effectiveness check.
  6. Summarize the audit, decide follow-up and log recurring inspections.
